Commissioning Week · U.S. Naval Academy · Annapolis, MD
One of the most iconic annual events in Annapolis — the U.S. Navy Blue Angels take to the skies over the Chesapeake Bay each May to celebrate the Naval Academy's Commissioning Week. Here are Jennelle's local tips for making the most of this once-a-year spectacle right in your backyard.
Every May, the U.S. Naval Academy's Commissioning Week culminates with a breathtaking aerial performance by the U.S. Navy Blue Angels — the Navy's elite flight demonstration squadron. The skies above the Chesapeake Bay and the Severn River become the stage for one of the most thrilling air shows in the country, drawing thousands of spectators from across the region.
You don't need a ticket to experience the Blue Angels — Annapolis offers spectacular free viewing all along the waterfront. Stake out your spot early, as road closures begin well before showtime and popular locations fill up fast.
For the best possible vantage point, the U.S. Naval Academy opens Dewey Field to the public during the air show. Free parking is available with a shuttle from the stadium to the footbridge. Entry is through Gates 1 & 8 — have your ID ready.
